The Chivalrous Crickets' members come from a variety of musical traditions and backgrounds which influence our repertoire selection and arranging choices. Sisters Fiona and Genevieve were raised in a family of traditional Celtic musicians. Champion fiddler Genevieve spent her formative years touring most of America's, as well as the UK & Ireland's, premier folk festival stages with a number of Irish bands. Fiona and Bradley both hold degrees in voice and specialize in music of the Baroque and Renaissance, along with members Paul and Ben Matus who work professionally as freelance continuo players in early music ensembles around the nation. (A sample of early Italian song performed by Paul and Fiona's duo can be heard on our MEDIA page). Paul's album of surrealist folk compositions, Flowers of the Rhododendron, with collaborator and musical polymath Doug Balliett, is an exploratory collage of musical genres, from Baroque to modern, using historical instruments. Ben Stewart is a self-taught musician hailing from Athens, OH. He brings his roots in Appalachian and Celtic music to the group, as well as his singer-songwriter talents. His first solo album releases in 2021. Fiona teaches music at the collegiate level, as well as leading folk singing & song workshops, and composing. Her fully-orchestrated "folk-rock" cantata Tam Lin , composed with Elliot Cole, releases in 2021. The Crickets work regularly with guest musicians and love to partner with other bands and ensembles in performance, recording, and other creative collaborative projects, exploring the crossover and blends between Celtic and American folk, new music, ancient European art music, and folk music from cultures around the world.
